The revisions are done! Bring me the finest muffins and bagels in the land. Or, alternatively, Numfar do the dance of joy!
Finishing a book is always a very very good feeling, no matter what draft it is. (For the record, we're on draft 5 of Shadow Kin, so far. Hopefully that number won't go much higher and there will only be line edits, copy edits and galleys to go.)
So hopefully that good feeling will carry me through fighting the crowds to do some Christmas shopping this morning! Then there will be rescuing of my house from it's current revision in full swing way too messy status!
Then I have to haul my brain back (or forward?) to Book 3. Whose hero is going to be lots of fun (In theory...you never quite know what they're going to do once they're given free rein on blank pages belonging to them!)
But for now I shall just bask in being done, done, done!

The call
Sorry there has been blog silence but there have been great things afoot which I have not been allowed to blog about...
Some of you may have heard the news already but people, I have sold a book! In fact, I have sold three. On the 20th of February I finally got "the call" and am beyond thrilled to announce that I'll be writing as M.J. Scott for Ace/Roc (Penguin USA's SF/F imprint). Ace/Roc publish a very high percentage of my favourite fantasy authors so I'm going to be in some very illustrious company.
Anyway, the actual story....
Those of you who read this blog know that after a year that wasn't really the highpoint in my writing life, I finished a new book and Miriam sent it out on January 21. We had some fairly immediate encouraging feedback that week and then some even more encouraging feedback the following week (at which point my nails started to fear for their lives). I was trying not to get too excited after all, publishing can move very slowly. And it's been a bit under three years since Miriam sent out my first book and the last twelve months or so have really not been the greatest time to try and sell as a debut author (note to aspiring authors out there...try not to have a Global Financial Crisis during your submission process) despite Miriam's untiring championing of me and my work. So I know that it's a long haul business.
However it seems the publishing gods finally decided to let me switch to a faster track because early the following week we got an offer. An offer from a house that has always been on my dream list. So Miriam went to work talking to the other houses who had the book, I stopped sleeping and started avoiding people so I wouldn't have to explain the stupid grin on my face and the waiting began. We got a second offer late on Friday in the US (Saturday morning for me) from another house that was on my dream list so then we knew there would be some sort of auction!! The US then had a long weekend which felt like the longest four days of my life (being ahead of the US here in Oz I knew I wouldn't hear anything until my Wednesday morning) where I had to walk around pinching myself a lot and swinging between happy and very very nervous.
The auction and various agentish things took until late Friday their time again but finally Miriam called me early Saturday morning my time and we talked and then she called the winning editor and then I got the official "call" from Miriam to say it was a done deal. So in the end it took just under a month. Plus the eight odd years of writing and submitting prior. Since then I've been walking around (or maybe floating around) in a bit of a daze, smiling a lot and still not sleeping very much as my brain comes up with a thousand and one questions and a thousand and one things to do, most of which have to wait.
As a piece of trivia - the number one question you get asked when you tell people you've sold a book is "when does it come out". Depending on who you've sold to, you probably won't know this straight away. At the moment I know it will be in the second half of next year but nothing more definite. The number two question is "when are you quitting your day job" (or maybe..does this mean you're resigning if you tell people at your day job). The answer to that one is easier. "Not right now and probably not for a while."
So it seems for the next 18 months or so there will be much learning about being a paid writer, much writing and hopefully much blogging about the process between the call and publication. I'll be posting news about release dates, titles, covers and all that good stuff as it comes to hand here and on my website (just updated...go see).
Until then I'll be working on book two (and book one revisions when they land), snoopy dancing and hopefully returning to a normal sleep pattern!

Happiness is a good writing day
This morning I woke up thinking "you know, if I could do 14 pages today, then I'd hit 200". Tomorrow and Sunday are going to be busy so I also knew that it's doubtful I'll get much writing done either day. As an added bonus, as I was lying there, still half asleep, the muse coughed up a few scene snippets. Bits of dialogue, an idea how to twist a relationship and a few pieces slipping into place.
So Friday was officially declared the day of the big writing push. I figured I could do fourteen pages in three hour or so sessions. But given things have been slow and sloggy writing-wise most of this year, I wasn't entirely sure that I'd hit fourteen pages at all. Luckily though, everything behaved itself and the words decided to come. And keep coming. I usually don't have days where I go much over 12 pages until the last 80 or so pages of the book but today proved an exception.
Happy writer, if somewhat tired. Now just have to work out how to keep the words coming.

DI Why?
It's been a busy weekend. Baking for lulu christmas party and going to another christmas party on Friday then off to Keri's for actual lulu christmas party on Saturday. It's normally a nice drive but yesterday was pouring so we did lulu carpooling and Freya did a sterling job of wet weather driving and we made it there and back and ate lots of goodies and laughed a lot as usual in between exclamations of "DECEMBER ALREADY? HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?".
Keri, being not just a NYT bestseller but also handy, had updated her kitchen with new handles. Pretty. And also made me think "hey, I could get rid of ugly plastic handles and do that".
So this morning I drove down the to trusty hardware store to buy new handles. Mission accomplished....or so I thought. But this is DIY and nothing is EVER straightforward in DIY. Got home and realised that the screws that come with the handles have to be cut and I don't have pliers quite up to the job. I figured that surely someone was sensible and produced the same screws in the variety of lengths that you can cut the ones supplied with all the handles to. So I trotted back to the hardware store where the nice hardware man disillusioned me. No-one (at least here in Australia it seems) makes pre-cut screws of this kind. To which you kind of have to say WTF? Anyway, this means I have to buy super pliers that will cut the screws. Done.
Then I return home and realise that despite the fact that all the handles in the stores being sold in standard widths, my old handles are 3mm off standard, so the new ones don't want to screw in using the old holes. I was reluctant to just drill new holes given that kitchen cupboards are flimsy so I returned to the hardware store to seek advice from the hardware man (my third trip if you're keeping track). He told me to just enlarge the bottom holes slightly with the drill. Okay. Do-able. At the same time, because I'd bent one of the screws trying to cut it with my original pliers, I bought a pack of the same type of screws which hardware store helpfully had near all the handles (it would seem that I am not the only one who bends the screws).
I return home and commence replacing handles and discovering that I need more bicep power than I possess and that because of the tight squeeze screws to get the handles to fit, I can't use an electric screwdriver and have to do it all by hand. I didn't do them all because cutting the screws has made my hands a bit sore, so I figure I'll space it out. But because I bent that first screw and another one has been eaten by the screw gremlins, I cut two of the extra screws. Only to find they're slightly too big for the handles....again I say what the frak? Why sell them if they're not going to fit? So I'm going to have to go buy another handle to get the two last screws I need. Le sigh. Looks like another trip to the hardware store coming up. At least there are only six handles to go. So yay me for being kind of handy in a very lame way and boo to screw manufacturers for being dills.

Done like a done thing
Woohoo! Revision is all done! Finished. 425 pages of done-ness. I think I officially deserve the afternoon off unless the girls want to play with something later on. I'm going to mail this sucker to Miriam and worry about what to work on next later on.

Today I found out I won Karin Tabke's First line comp! Woot!!
Also, the fabulous Deb, came second.

It's cooler, so hopefully there will be sleeping.
House is on tonight (though I'm starting to wonder how on earth the producers managed to get whassernames who play Chase and Cameron to accept such slashed roles, I'm willing to keep watching to find out if things turn around and also, of course, Hugh is hot).
Tomorrow night I'm going to Spamalot.
My Circa is bought and shortly to be in the mail.
All is good. Now if only someone would magic me up some dinner...

Yay!
I made the final five of Karin Tabke's first line comp, so I get to send ten pages to Hilary Teeman at St Martin's Press. After some revising.
It was a very interesting comp, you post one line each week if you're not eliminated. I managed to tighten my opening a lot in the process, so it was a great learning experience to sit back and take time to think in detail about each line and the effect it created. Interesting to watch others do the same as well!
Not much else to report, I've been down at the folks due to my dad having one of his little medical dramas but he is on the mend now. For once, it has been hotter down here than in Melbourne!
More when I return....

Done!
And tonight I'm announcing the arrival of a bouncing 357 page manuscript.
The book, eet iz done.
A little short for now, as always, but I'm confident it will thrive nicely and put on some length during the revision process. Which is sometime in the future that I'm refusing to think about just now.
Because now is all about the la la la, done done done, snoopy dance land of finished!
Non-writers don't quite understand what finishing a book feels like. I can't really describe it either, but trust me, it' s pretty damn good!
PS. Guess who's going to pick up her copy of Kushiel's Scion tomorrow? : )) Guilt free, I might add! That's right, me. Because I am done!

Yay
I'm very happy to announce that Wolfy won the Romance Writers of Australia Single Title and Loving contest, judged by Shauna Summers. Yay! Congrats also to Bronwyn Clarke, fellow GH finalist, who came second and third.
Much champagne has been drunk at lulus today to celebrate.
And in other news, I still have writing to do, so if you want something pretty to look out, check out Jenny Crusie, Eileen Dreyer and Anne Stuart's gorgeous Unfortunate Miss Fortunes site. The design is based on the book cover, which is another gorgeous SMP cover. There are some lovely downloads for desktops, I've got one now and the blues and night tones are very evocative for my world.

It's a miracle!
Well, I don't know quite what's happened but something shook loose today and I've managed to get down 17 pages. That's after several weeks of absolute crawling along. Maybe it was taking the day off completely yesterday, maybe it was a dose of ballet. Who knows? But whatever it was I like it!
Those of you paying attention might notice that I've revised the wordcount down a little. Somewhere in the middle of whining to Keri last night, I remembered that my wordcount for the first draft of number 1 was 90k, not 100k. I write short not long in first draft. Lots of talking heads and [insert reaction here]. So I decided 90k was the aim for this one too. Somehow having 80 odd pages to go just seems a lot more do-able right now than 120 odd. It doesn't make much logical sense, the rest of the words still have to be written at some point, after all, number one is now something like 110k but for some reason, 90k is making the muse much happier. Some I'm going with that. No-one ever said writing was a completely rational process. And if they did, they were wrong. Irrational works for me.
So yay me. I might just make my target of 75k by the end of the long weekend and if I do, I've got about sixty pages to go after that. Which seems doable, even if I start freaking out about Dallas (note to self, do not freak out about Dallas). Yippee and yeehah. I have suitably rewarded myself with another dose of PoTC 3 (much Jack and Will love) and am about to follow that up with McDreamy and co. Life is good!

Halfway
Busy weekend. I've made it to the halfway point in the wip, we had a lulu meeting, contest entries were judged, treasurer stuff was judged and (sob) the last episodes ever of the West Wing were watched.
Thank goodness this week has a holiday in the middle.
And can I just say a big "have fun" to Keri, who heads off to RT tomorrow. This time last year she went, and her hardcover hadn't yet come out. Since then she's had four books out and is a USA Today and NTY bestselling author!! That's what I call a good year. And it wasn't even the golden pig. Imagine what can happen by the end of this year...
And now, into the second half. I'd like to finish this book by the end of May. Which may be a tall order but I'll give it a whack.

That was the weekend that was
Okay one of those blink-and-three-days has passed weekends. There was catching up with folks (including one cutie pie baby), upgrading of computers, collaging, chores and a big old load of treasurer stuff today. So haven't quite moved that progress bar along quite as far as I wanted but I have figured some stuff out and I'm at 40% and want to try and hit 50% by the end of this week.
In further adventures of the Wolf and the Golden Pig, I found out today that I'm a finalist in RWAustralia's Emerald Single Title award, which is fantastic. So that's officially four comps entered with this book and four finals. Hopefully more good things are still to come.

The pig strikes again
That golden pig seems to be doing good work for the lulus.
Wednesday Chris Weston came second in the RWNZ's Second Chance comp and scored herself a request from Harlequin (2nd chance is a best of the best comp, so go you good thing).
Yesterday the VT came third in the YA category of the Great Expectations comp and I, just to prove the theory of VT freakiness, also came third in the paranormal category of that comp.
We like the piggy : ) Lulus rock!
Also congrats to fellow aussies Tracey O'Hara who came second in the paranormal category (a good day for aussie paranormal gals) and Kiki Opdenberg with third in steamy hot and fourth in YA and all the other winners and placegetters.

Woohoo!!
I alluded to some very good stuff in my last post.
So here's a bit of an update. I have an AGENT! A fantastic, fabulous agent.
In fact, pretty much my dream agent!!!
I've been walking around for a week now, pinching myself and re-reading the emails from her to know it's not a dream but given we've just had our second phone conversation (at the moment our email seems to be playing a not so fun little game called 'every now and then we'll just mysteriously disappear into the ether' - stern words will be had with my ISP shortly) and she didn't seem to have forgotten who I am : 0, it is apparently all true.
For now, I'll call her Agent X, there's still the legal stuff to be done, but I'm pretty excited (and have now crowned myself queen of the understatement). She's smart, she's good, she likes my stuff! And she'll be championing the wolf book into the wide world of publishing.

For now, I'll call her Agent X, there's still the legal stuff to be done, but I'm pretty excited (and have now crowned myself queen of the understatement). She's smart, she's good, she likes my stuff! And she'll be championing the wolf book into the wide world of publishing.

Noice
Had some good news yesterday. My experimental, different for me, what the heck am I doing, wolf book has finalled in the Romance Writers of Australia Single Title and Loving It comp. Yippee. The final judge is Shauna Summers, so I'm very pleased.
It's still out there in the ether doing some other comp rounds and the agent query thing but it's nice to find out that other folks like it too.
Fingers crossed this is the beginning of a trend.

A cool way to start the day
I have to say when Ms Keri rocks, she rocks hard. Check this out...the paperback of Full Moon Rising has been out a week and it's 101 on the USA Today bestseller list! Because it's a great book that's why...so go check it out if you're into the paranormal. Or even if you're not.
It will even be out in Australia and the UK in paperback later this year for those of us not in the US.

My friend is a best seller. That's pretty cool. I mean, I've met some best sellers before but this one I get to read her stuff before anyone else and she reads mine and I've eaten chocolate with her, partied with her, shared a room with her in various locales and watched her work damn hard at her writing. Success couldn't happen to a nicer gal!
If I had a LJ I'd have to say my mood was mucho chuffed : )

Holy crap, I finished. A month ahead of my schedule.
374 pages. 94k. That's a LOT! : )))

Done
It's done.
I'm not sure how. Today I wrote over thirty pages. Over 6 thousand words. More than I've ever written in a day. In maybe five hours. Something shook loose and the movie started playing in my head and this sucker is done.
At least, the DLD draft is. I'm sure whatever I wrote today is high on talking heads and there's tweaking and filling in to be done and then critiquing and revising but for now, I'm done.
It feels done. Which is good. Sometimes you finish and it doesn't and you know something not quite right. But this feels done. Only other writers understand the feeling. It's pretty darn good.
Um, brain empty. Sleep now.

Lost again
Sorry, writers of Lost, tonight you are trumped by mint chip chocolate and Pride and Prejudice on DVD. Sometimes a gal needs treats.
There has been a little writing this week, hopefully tomorrow that will improve further. And then Saturday it is the Lulu mexican feast. Roll out the pineapple margaritas.
Um, that losing weight bit...that is not progressing much just now. I wonder why? : )
So margaritas one day then salad for the next seven. But it's worth it.
