Yes, I am indeed alive. Bad blogger. But I have been suffering from a horrible cold which decided it should bring its friend razorblade throat and consequently have done little worthy of blogging for a week. Catalogues of pills and potions and tissue count are not very exciting. I haven't even read a lot due to foggy brain. I have watched a fair amount of DVD (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and most of Glee if you care) and slept a lot. Perhaps I'm turning into a TV watching cat.
But today I am starting to feel human again and have managed ten pages. Yay. The muse is throwing up disconnected random snippets but at least they're snippets that are flowing easily. So given book has decided to talk again, I'm figuring Murphy's Law will dictate that my revisions will hit any second now and I'll have to switch tracks. But oh well, nice problem to have : )

Still buggy. Sadly my cats cannot say "bless you", so I sneeze in silence (and possibly endanger my soul or whatever it is that saying bless you is meant to protect you from). Normal blogging shall resume when I no longer need shares in Kleenex.

Grrr. And possibly argh.
I have returned from my travels, which were lovely and relaxing. However have also returned with a touch of a cold. Hopefully it won't be much more than a touch as I have been downing echinacea and various vitamins all through the conference and travelling in an attempt to avoid exactly this.
Any way, being slightly coldish, I decided that a lazy Sunday might be in order but that I also needed some groceries. So toddled off to the shopping centre to achieve groceries. Given said shopping centre has several electronics type stores, I decided to look into acquiring a new cheapass TV to replace my currently on its last legs dvd playing bedroom TV. Turns out this is not so simple. The net effect of all this plasma and LCD craze in TVs seems to be that TVs are more now expensive, even the little ones. And I don't want to pay "you-want-how-much" for a TV just to play dvds in my bedroom. But I eventually found a cheap smallish CRT TV at Dick Smith and carted it home. Then there was a suitable pause while I did the "I think I need to sit down now as I am sick and just did a bit too much" thing on the couch. Then I had the cunning plan to set up the new TV so I could maybe have a really lazy Sunday afternoon reading and watching DVDs and napping in bed.
So I lug the thing into the bedroom, disconnect and lug the old one out, connect the new one up, apply power and um, nothing happened. Zip. Good old electrickery does not seem to do much for this TV at all. (I will add as a side bar that the darn thing has no buttons on the TV, you have to use the remote!!!) Not even a little standby light anywhere. I'm half wondering if the battery for the remote is dead (and of course it's some fancy little round lithium thing so hardly have one on hand) but the lack of any sort of standby light is leaning me towards "this is an ex-TV". And the power point is working cos the old TV worked fine and the DVD works fine.So now it looks like I have to lug it back to the store. Where words will be had if they don't produce another one tout suite.
Only I really can't be fagged doing that today so I think for now I shall just apply my head to the desk and then lie on the couch instead.

Resting
I've got one of those bugs that won't quite go away. Had it for over a month now. Just a cold-ish type thing. Bit of a sore throat, bit of a cough, snuffly. Makes me feel average for a couple of days then disappears. It came back Thursday and I was wrecked yesterday and did very little. Bit better today but I can still feel it lurking despite the drugs and vitamins.
So I'm prescribing a lot of couch time (apart from the Pink concert tonight because I've forked out good money already and Pink rocks) for the rest of the weekend because I cannot be sick on Monday (three presentations to give at work). I doubt there'll be much writing progress to report unless I get inspired with the netbook. Brain function is more at the knitting, staring at the TV, sleeping level.

Blurk
So last weekend I was feeling a bit buggy and all week I was EXHAUSTED and pushed it a bit by going out two nights so Friday afternoon I started feeling pretty terrible and yesterday was spent mostly asleep. Today I'm feeling a bit better but hardly full of pep. So it's been a sleeping and reading and lying on the couch watching dvds type of weekend. Which is annoying because I wanted to start my Frenchy bag and get stuck into the wip and get back into the exercise routine which had slightly gone out the window due to feeling not well. Guess that will have to wait a bit.
Friday, before I started feeling bad, I made these:

They're the Perfect Pouches pattern by Lazy Girl Designs, which I have to say is a very easy and quick to do pattern. I didn't have any batting, so just interfaced the back and it seems to work fine. I made the blue one first then was experimenting with the red one to see if I could find a way of doing it so you don't end up with raw seams inside that you zig zag. Short answer, yes, you can, long answer, yes you can with a french seam but it comes out a bit wonky looking cos the seams get very bulky around the zip and corners and it's hard to keep it squared. I think an easier option might be cutting slightly bigger so you've got a big enough seam allowance to turn the edges over twice. Or you know, living with zig zag or another finishing stitch. The way you do the zips in these is really nifty and clever and they're very quick to do. I'm going to make some bigger ones for packing and travelling etc.
This afternoon I made this (probably not the smartest idea. Sewing while slightly brain befuddled = unpicking).

This is the large boxed version of the Nicole Mallalieu coin purse design. I didn't get one side seam quite right, there too big a gap between the zip and the edge but I am considering these my learning versions. I didn't interface this one because I wanted to see what it was like without it. Answer, probably fine in a slightly heavier fabric but I'll do a light interfacing on the outer material in future versions to give it a bit more structure.
And now I'm going to lie on the couch some more and maybe wriggle my fingers over the alphie after I've recovered from a whole hour or so of sewing. I hate viruses!

If you've got it, flaunt it
About all I have to flaunt at the moment is a bug that knocked me out late in the evening of my birthday and has kept me in bed, sleeping and reading (yay for ebooks on the iPhone) for most of the two days since.
So to entertain you until my brain starts to function again, a couple of snaps of the gorgeous lilies a couple of the work gals gave me. They smell as good as they look, or at least they do when the decongestants work. Maybe they'll inspire my other Lily to tell me a bit more of her story.

Silliness
Sorry for the blog silence, it is crazy time at the day job (as it is every year at this time of year but this year I have added bonus of having to get lots done before the big vacation) so not much to report. I seem to have yet another cold, or maybe it's the same cold that never went away, just went into hiberanation or something. Grumble.
And I have these courtesy of the vet and the manufacturers of the beasties pet food. Cute! And comfy. I especially like the little tails. Though I may have to hide them from the orange cat who has strong views about being the only orange cat in the house : )

Four at a time
Not quite as many as I hoped for today but all my running around this morning took longer than expected, then I had to go grocery shopping to stock up on the limited things that I'm allowed to eat for the next two weeks courtesy of the naturopath (including no caffeine, and no chocolate...doesn't she know I'm at the end of a book?? I keep reminding myself it's short term pain for long term gain but so far I remain unconvinced : ) ). After all of that, the cold reasserted itself and I got the "must lie on couch nows". Still a thousand words is a thousand words. Hopefully I can have two good days tomorrow and Sunday and hit 70k.

And again
Man, sorry if this has been a boring week of posts but combining end of book push with cold-induced head fog doesn't make for sparkling repartee.
Today, I decided I'd top off the cold with a flu vacc then spent the afternoon shivering. Feeling better again now, so hopefully I'll just escape with a sore arm tomorrow. I've realised this seems to happen to me every year. Like clockwork, the day or so before I'm due for my flu shot, I get a cold. Weird. Or maybe just a coincidence that this is a busy-ish time of year for the day job and the weather usually starts being schizophrenic and therefore I get run down.
Anyway, today is not exactly a huge page count but given my mental state (plus the fact that my foggy brain decided tonight would be a good night to reconsider the whole I need a website issue and go investigating on the internet and playing with templates and hey presto, instant time sink) I'll take it. Tomorrow I've got a date with the naturopath and a massage and lunch in the city with nice gaps between each so I'll take the alphie and the iPod and write in between if I can find a good place. I'm not big on the whole writing in cafes thing but I'll give it a go. But I also need to get up early to accomplish all that, so it's another early night.

The daily report
Well I can't entirely blame late night phone calls for my sleepy state. Tossed and turned last night and woke up coughing and spluttering with some sort of cold. Ick.
Just did an experiment with minimising the Scrivener screen and using Think to try and mimic an more alphie experience at the computer (mostly to be able to use the ergonomic keyboard to keep the hands happier). Not quite the same (could only get the screen down to about ten lines rather than four) but it did seem to be a bit faster. One to remember.
Hope no-one got blown away in Melbourne's wild weather today...next time WA has a hurricane, they can keep the tail to themselves, thanks!
Anyway, the result...

Tired
Am having a 'can I go back to bed yet?' day. In fact, I've been having a few of those lately. More than can be blamed on changeable weather and lack of maids. However I've been poked and prodded by the doctors and am declared healthy or at least not having anything obvious that would make one tired. Which leaves the not obvious or the general go go go of the last eight months or so has caught up with me.
So I guess it's time for plan B. Which I think is a naturopath, Freya having recommended one who isn't quite as extreme as the one I saw when I had glandular fever (who yes, helped the energy level at the time but was a leetle too fond of "high protein, high protein, high protein, here drink a mucho disgusting protein shake" for my comfort). I don't eat terribly so there has to be a happy medium somewhere.
If that doesn't work, we'll figure out plan C, though I have no idea what that is given I still haven't located the rich husband store so can't really afford to do nothing but lie on a beach for twelve months typing and reading and lazing and admiring said rich husband while lackeys do everything else....short pause while I convince myself that I really can't afford it...okay, I'm back.
In the meantime, it's time to get back to meditating and exercising and loading up on the healthy food (the latter two being not so easy to execute consistently when one is feeling exhausted).
And I can be tired and not write or tired and still writing. Given not writing doesn't help the stress levels any, I'm planning on the latter. After all, you can write lying down! Barbara Cartland apparently dictated her novels. That sounds like the ultimate low energy way to write. Though I'm not sure I could do it that way.
So the plan is general taking it easy, writing and relaxing. And in the next ten minutes or so...bedtime!

Retrograded
I have been awol and I blame Mercury and it’s annoying retrogradiness. I wish the damned planet would just face the right way all the time. There have been suicidal computer monitors and parking tickets and sickness and broken-into cars.
I am basically cranky and not fit to blog. So I’ll be the one staying in bed until the 17th when the stupid planet stops its contrariness. Most likely sucking down Loretta Chase and Crusie and Bujold and all my cheer-yourself books. After I finish The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne which is most excellent (go buy it if you love good historicals).
And now I shall sign off before something else blows up.

Something's gotta give
It was one of those weeks (actually it's been one of those months with many very crappy things happening to very nice people so note to the universe: enough now, 'kay? thanks). Because I am apparently old and feeble, I caught a cold after being rained on at Bon Jovi. A slightly snuffly but a lot sore throaty and feverish cold.
I was all set to have carpet guy come back to deliver the final verdict on my carpet post flood but that meant having to move stuff off the carpet again. Should've done some of it last weekend but didn't due to other things. Monday night I was sick. Tuesday I was sick and mostly asleep all day. Wednesday I was still sick but better and work was frantic and then I had to go out. Thursday work was still frantic and I was exhausted.
I think I've talked before about how trying to keep all the balls in the air is hard work at times. Day job. Writing job. Exercise. Eating right. Housework. Having a life. Most of the time I seem to manage four or five out of six. If six out of six are happening for a while then something always seems to come along to throw things out of whack and send balls off in all directions. Which annoys the Virgo brain no end. Virgo brains think that you should be able to do it all. Virgo brains have unrealistic expectations a lot of the time. So maybe I have a seventh ball which is called 'getting the brain to chill the heck out'.
This week was more like a four out of six just staying in the air week. I got to Thursday and just wasn't up to organising stuff and moving furniture. Needless to say, carpet guy got rescheduled and I'm planning to get relatively organised this weekend so I don't have to do it all next Thursday (let's see if it works). But I'm starting to think that maybe a cleaner is inevitable. Not yet. I need to save for RWA National (which I'm all registered for, YAY) so that I can afford to do things like eat when I get there. But maybe in the second half of the year. Removing one of the balls seems sensible and housework is the only one that's really outsourceable unless I win Tatts (which is difficult when I rarely remember to buy a ticket) and can afford a chef and a trainer and a maid lol.
And now, off to juggle some more

Re-bugged
Apparently what I was meant to do this week when I started feeling like I'd recovered and had, you know, energy again, was actually realise I hadn't quite and take it easy. Because it seems rushing around actually DOING stuff this week has let the bug take a second swipe at me and I am back to feeling wobbly if I try and do much beyond toddle from bed to couch.
Boo hiss to the bug.
And thank goodness for the aforementioned book binge which is providing entertainment during my more awake moments.
But about all the writing I'm managing is the exercises for my online course and a few shaky paragraphs attempted yesterday which I have a horrible feeling might be the start of Wolf 3. Which I am NOT yet ready to write.
Contrary writer brain.

Things you learn when you have the flu
1. You still know all the words to every song in the Rocky Horror Picture Show even if you haven't watched it for years. And Frank's entrance and opening song in the movie is still fabulous aka Tim Curry rocks.
2. Even when you start to think you're feeling better, a thirty minute slow walk around the grocery store will make you feel exhausted.
3. Your body doesn't understand "I'm sick, eat healthy." It wants carbs. Plain white sugary carbs. Lemonade and white toast.
4. Sleep is your friend.
5. The girls will not let you write the wild one night stand scene while your brain is goop.
6. You need more books.
7. Polar fleece dressing gowns are wonderful.
8. Watching Mansfield Park will confused you and make you think "I'm not sure I remember that in the story". You will then discover Mansfield Park is the one Jane Austen you don't own so you will not be able to read it again to check.
9. Sleep is still your friend.
10. You will not be able to think of a tenth thing for your list because your brain is goop.

Still bugged
Starting to feel a little better but the last few days have largely featured sleeping, coughing and reading in bed before falling asleep yet again. When I'm sick I tend to re-read things, so I've been visiting with Fast Women (Jenny Crusie), Monstrous Regiment (Terry Pratchett), The Perfect Kiss (Anne Gracie) and Desperate Duchesses (Eloisa James). All good books for when you're sick.
This morning I've managed to stagger out of bed to take the grey cat to get more blood siphoned to check her thyroid levels and put some washing on but now I'm getting that washed-out, more sleep required virusy feeling again. So I think it's back to bed for me.
Though Quickflix did just deliver a few more episodes of Rome...so maybe I can compromise and lie on the couch instead. I'm loving Rome (which I didn't watch the first time round because it was shown, in typical Australian commercial TV this-is-different-and-possibly-requires-thinking-so-let's-mess-with-it fashion, all over the place at seemingly random times. And while the story is entertaining enough, what I'm really enjoying is the world. All the little touches, the odd religious rituals, the household icons, the graffiti on the walls, the differences between rich and poor. All stuff I knew about Rome in that time period but they've evoked a whole world beautifully. I can see why they couldn't afford to keep making it. Luckily, as writers, it doesn't cost us anything but time and effort to find those little details that can wake up a scene and make a created world seem real to the reader.
