Hot like a hot thing

Not much to say about this week except it has been hot like well, a very hot thing. Four days of 40, 43, 44, 46 (something like 100, 110, 110, 112) with hot nights. Melbourne's train system and now the power system has gone into meltdown (we're on rolling blackouts today) and all in all it makes for a lot of grumpy people whose brains could not compose coherent blogs if you paid them.

There was a mini cool change this arvo where the temp dropped back to 33 but hasn't gotten much cooler than that so houses etc aren't getting much of a chance to cool down. Boo. We need some rain and some coolness.

I've been keeping up with the exercise despite the heat (thank goodness for air con in the vicinity of my elliptical) but not achieving much writing wise. I get weird random snippets and flashes in my head of various books but not much of that is translating to the page. And I have one opening scene that's driving me nuts because it's boring me and I can't figure out how to fix it. I did write a short story the other day. I think the last time I wrote a short story would've been high school so go figure. But at least it was words...

I did meet my goal of adding Cardio Coach Volume 2 to the exercise mix this month, I've done it in full a few times now (he's tough, that Cardio Coach). So starting Sunday I have to work on adding Volume 3. Though actually, I've done a short version of 3 a couple of times (skipping the middle challenge) when I was in the mood for something sprinty. It's hard work as a short one, so it'll be interesting to do the full length version!

Also for February there will be sorting out how to work and write and exercise. I've done it before so I'm sure my brain will kick back in eventually. I figure whatever the girls are mulling over has to be good if it's taking them that long!

What I did on my birthday by the Orange Cat

Every year the human gets the day off work for my birthday. She reckons it's called "Australia Day" but I know it's International Day of Orange Cat Glory and must be celebrated appropriately.

Firstly I woke up nice and early and woke the human up with a special birthday yowl I'd been practicing. It worked. She got up and gave me breakfast then seemed to go back to sleep. Probably conserving her strength for later celebrations. Not to worry, I just knocked over one of her cushions and slept on that. Then I moved to a patch of sunlight (especially arranged for my birthday I'm sure).

Once the human got up I demonstrated my birthday yowl a few more times. She seemed very impressed. Not sure why she told me to go outside except it was probably to let the neighbours also experience my special yowl.

I also investigated my favourite dirt pile so I could maintain my chic orange with dirt splotches birthday outfit. It's stylish, I don't care what that fluffy grey thing thinks.

After all that, was quite tired so had afternoon birthday nap on my couch. The human did something weird where she gets into all these strange positions on a mat thingy. She thinks she's being a cat but she's just not bendy enough. I keep offering to demonstrate but she mutters at me when I sit on her while she's doing bendy things and then she closes the door to the room. Unfriendly. I told her so with a yowl. I'm sure she paid attention.

After the couch nap, I had to go out and try out the nice warm concrete. Napped again. Apparently my concrete is going to be extra warm for the next few days in celebration of my birthday, so yay.

Now I'm waiting for the human to sit on the couch so I can sit on her and possibly try to give her my special nose nibble of niceness. And maybe a few more birthday yowls. Then, I'm sure there will be cake. Hopefully meat flavoured. Take note if you were thinking of sending a gift.

Reporting

Well I managed two pages which is not going to set any daily page count records on fire but is a start this early in the back to work routine. Plus my hero is having to ask for help and he's not real big on that so he's being stubborn. Some staring at the collage may be required. Now that we're trying to keep this regular exercise thing up again I need to work on getting the balance of after work exercise-eating-writing-cooking time right and still get to bed at a reasonable hour.

I'm not the up early to exercise before work type. I can exercise in the morning when I'm not working but I need my zzz's before work. Plus I find if I do enough cardio to be worth it first thing in the morning, particularly during summer, then I need at least an hour to cool down properly or I get sweaty at the drop of a hat during the day (sorry, TMI, I'm sure). Not gonna happen. Still, once the pilate class starts again next week, I'll be able to knock that off in a lunch time so that should mean I only have to exercise two working day nights.

Anyhoo, stats for the day.

Progress - Witch 2

New/Revised pages - 2

Hot hot hot

Today Melbourne has done a schizophrenic flip and decided to go for hot hot hot. I blame the fact that the Australian Open starts next week. That's usually the cue for our weather to skyrocket...perfect for baking poor little tennis players to death. 37 today and 39 tomorrow.

But despite that and due to the fact that I called a first-day-back-at-work-I'm-pooped day off the exercise yesterday, I needed to do my cardio today. So I figured I'd do the short version of Cardio Coach Volume 2 and that would be a good way to test it out. Except, in true contrary fashion, my mini's remote control decided to hide so I had no way to fast forward once I got started. So I did the whole thing! Yay! 8.3kms in just under 40 mins which I think is my official longest session on the ET ever. Hard work and I've still got away to go before I can do it without dropping my pace in the places I'm not meant to drop my pace but yay. Go me and thank goodness for air con or else I think I would've spontaneously combusted.

Next dinner and then we'll see if the wip wants to play as nicely as the legs. I think it's probably time to implement some metrics again, even though it might be a bit of leap frogging form wip to wip at the moment, I want to clock up 30-40 pages this week.

Happy Blog-o-versary to me!

A glimpse back at the archives tells me that I started this here little blog on 12 January 2006. Three years ago! My blog has apparently past the terrible twos and is into the even terribler (if my friends with small children are to be believed) threes : )

As this date coincides with my return to the day job, I'm not sure my brain is up to coming up with any deep and meaningful posts on the last three years or blogging in general so instead I'm going with Mel's meme of threes (feel free to join in - doesn't have to be your top three, just three of your favourites):

Three favourite colours: Cobalt blue, hot pink and aqua

Three favourite drinks: Lime and soda, magaritas, vanilla coke (when I'm allowing myself to drink coke)

Three favourite sounds: Cats purring, my friends laughing, the ocean

Three favourite books: Sunshine by Robin McKinley, Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie and Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold

Three favourite songs: One by U2, Heavenly Day by Patty Griffin, The One That Got Away by Pink

Three favourite celluloid men: Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Captain Jack Harkness (I sense a theme)

Three favourite foods: Lindt dark mint chocolate, fresh baked bread, guacamole

Three least favourite things: Big hairy spiders, the sound of my alarm clock, throwing up

Three favourite defunct TV shows: Buffy, Firefly, Coupling

Three favourite things about writing: Watching the progress meter get further along, solving a story problem, days when the pages flow and time vanishes

Three favourite current TV shows: Top Gear, Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica

Three favourite places: Scotland, my couch and the beach

Three favourite pastimes: Reading, writing, watching movies

Three words that describe you: Creative, smart, practical

Three favourite movies: Pirates of the Carribean, Field of Dreams, Stage Beauty

Three guilty pleasures: Cheesy sports/dance movies; slightly stale supermarket doughnuts, Gossip Girl

Three things you'd grab in a fire: Cats, computer, purse

Three favourite genres to read: Urban fantasy, regency historicals, romantic comedy

Three places you'd like to go: Tuscany, the Maldives, New York

Three favourite genres to write: Urban fantasy, paranormal romance, romantic comedy

Three random facts about yourself: I have two and half kidneys, I sing in the car, My legs itch when I peel potatoes.

Back to the real world

Tomorrow it's back to the day job and the real life routine. I didn't get everything done that I wanted to get done - the garden remains a wilderness and my writing was slow (then again, it's always slow over Christmas even though I conveniently forget this fact every year) - but I did get other things done, got completely off caffeine again, saw all my friends, did lots of lazing around reading and watching dvds and, best of all, stuck to my exercise routine which has a way of vanishing when I'm on holiday. I've even cranked it up a notch or two.

Given that 2008 has to be dubbed the year of inconsistent exercise for me (partly due to health reasons but partly due to slackness), I'm hoping this is a trend I can continue. I've bought some pilates dvds so that I can still do a session even on the weeks I miss class (and have done them over the break so I hopefully will not have the usual oh-ow-ow-ow-ow-I-have-not-done-pilates-for-a-bit that usually comes after a brea) and (miracles do happen) I've found that I'm really enjoying my cardio sessions thank to my Cardio Coach mp3s. Normally I listen to music or occasionally my Brain Sync walking meditation tapes (which are good for steady walking but don't really make you push). But I used to always find I got bored and it's hard to push yourself. I wanted to add some interval training sessions to my cardio to help with the general fitness and weightloss goals and I'd downloaded Cardio Coach Volume 1 ages ago after reading about it on Dietgirl's blog but due to said year of inconsistent exercise hadn't tried it until a few weeks ago. Funnily enough I love it even though it's longer and harder than I've ever done on ye olde elliptical before. I sweat a lot and get that good exercise buzz at the end (like I used to get from Spin or Step only without the sore butt from spin or sore knees from Step). So I've bought a few more (thanks to convenient buy two get two free sale they had recently) and my cunning plan is to try and add a volume each month (they seem to get generally longer and harder though you can tailor them by skipping sections). So by the end of Jan my aim is to be able to do all of Volume 2.

I know there will be weeks when I fall off the wagon when you add the day job back into the mix but I feel better and sleep better when I exercise so I'm going to try and do my best to minimise these this year.

Books read in 2009

I'm doing this in a post again this year...it's easier to manage. These are my read for the first time books in 2009. Newest at the top, oldest at the bottom.

Also, given that I've started reading e-books on the iPhone a lot more than I used to read e-books when I only had the computer to read them on, I'm going to keep track of whether I read things electronically or on paper. So (e) means, funnily enough, read in e-book. The iPhone is a pretty good e-reader but I'd still like Apple or someone to invent THE great e-reader that has a book sized screen, is light, is prettier than the Kindle plus not locked to Amazon (plus hey Aussies can't download stuff from Amazon anyway), less expensive than the current e-readers and will do multiple formats. Till then, it's iPhone for me I guess.

Given Star Wars Episode 4 came out when I was seven and I'm now thirty years on from that, that's not only an average of four a year if they span time fairly evenly. Hardly not having a life. Though I will admit to easily watching far more than four movies a year : ) Or maybe it's the particular movies that are supposedly bad for you?
